Our Favorite Walkable Places to Stay on St. Simons Island, Georgia

The best vacations are the ones where a car is optional, and St. Simons Island is one of those places. St. Simons is about 12 miles long and almost 3 miles wide at its widest point. Knowing that, you’ll agree that to see all of it, you will need some wheels of some type – be it an e-bike, UBER, golf cart, or to occasionally pull your car out on the road. But, there are several areas where you can stay within an easy walk of restaurants, shops, bars, attractions, and even the beach. Let’s break down the walkable places to stay on the island now.

St. Simons Island Village

Also known as the “pier village,” but you’ll immediately label yourself as a tourist if you call it that. Don’t get me wrong – tourists are loved and welcomed here, but locals and old-timers call it simply “the village”. This is where you’ll find the greatest concentration of things to do and places to eat and drink within an easy walk.

Along Mallery Street and Ocean Blvd., and branching out for several blocks are many of the best restaurants of St. Simons Island, several of our favorite island bars (many with happy hour specials), and our favorite places to go shopping on St. Simons Island.

Besides all that, the things to do on St. Simons Island list includes the lighthouse and its keeper’s cottage, the pier itself (for fishing, crabbing, and just people watching), and catching a trolley tour.

Walkable places to stay on St. Simons Island in the village

• Village Inn and Pub – a gorgeous, but quaint inn (adults only) and the onsite pub is one of our favorite bars on St. Simons Island.
• Queens Court – budget friendly retro “motel” right in the heart of the village.
• Ocean Inn & Suites – recent renovations and fabulous views (many of the balconies overlook the lighthouse) and a variety of room/suite sizes are what you’ll find here.
• VRBO – for private home rentals, we suggest that you use the mapping tool and focus on the area near the intersection of Mallery Street and Ocean Blvd./Kings Way.

Redfern Village

This area is home to one of our favorite seafood restaurants on St. Simons Island as well as several other eateries, bars, and lots of shopping and art galleries (check out this article for more on the St. Simons Island art scene.

Just outside Redfern, you’ll find three great St. Simons Island breakfast spots – Dulce Dough for homemade donuts, Sweet Mama’s (ask for their specialty – pork pops), and Sandy Bottom Bagels.

You’ll be a bike or golf cart ride away from the beach and village here, but have plenty of eating and shopping options within an easy walk.

Walkable places to stay on St. Simons Island in the Redfern Village area

• Hampton Inn – We’ve stayed in dozens of Hampton Inns, and this is one of our favorites. (Insider tip: walk out the back right of the parking lot along a short path and you’re in Redfern Village)
• Cater Cove – A fantastic 3 bedroom home with a pool and optional golf cart is tucked into a residential neighborhood but walkable to Red Fern, the world famous Southern Soul BBQ and more.
• VRBO – Enter Redfern Village, St. Simons Island in the search bar at the top and then zoom in on the map to the intersection of Frederica Rd. and Redfern Village.

Crab Corners (King & Prince area)

There is a nice little concentration of restaurants with bars, a brewery, an ice cream shop, and boutique-type stores, including a small produce market, in this area. It’s also home to one of the spots on the Coastal Georgia BBQ Trail – Beachcomber!

The King & Prince Beach & Golf Resort is a destination in itself and features great amenities, including one of the island’s two waterfront dining options.

In this area are public beach access points as well as two beach parks with restroom facilities, picnic tables, etc. Get the details on them and all of the beaches on the island in the St. Simons Beach Guide. At the Coast Guard Station Beach, you’ll find an excellent museum, the World War II Homefront Museum.

Walkable Places to stay in the King & Prince area

• The King & Prince Beach & Golf Resort is a historical hotel with amazing amenities and can accommodate events like weddings. They have a variety of lodging options, including suites, villas and private homes. The golf course is off-site, but they offer a shuttle for guests.
• Hotel Simone boasts a rooftop pool and all suites.
• VRBO is where you’ll find condominium listings for St. Simons Grand and Beach Club Saint Simons, which are both walkable to everything the area has to offer. VRBO also lists numerous private homes. Zoom in on the map to the area near the King & Prince, or the intersection of Ocean Blvd. and Arnold Road.

Sea Palms Resort

Sea Palms is mid-island, but is the only place to stay on the island with an on-site golf course other than the exclusive Sea Island property – The Lodge at Sea Island.

If it’s important to you to be walking distance to the course, this is the place to be. Sea Palms can also accommodate events, like weddings.

On site, along with the lodging options at Sea Palms, you’ll also find a restaurant with a bar.
