How to get to Tybee Island
Tybee Island, GA is connected to the mainland by a scenic causeway (US-80) and sits just 18 miles east of historic Savannah. The drive takes about 30 minutes with gorgeous marsh views the whole way. It’s a perfect stop on any coastal Georgia road trip itinerary.
The closest airport is Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV), about 40 minutes away. Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is about 2 hours south if you find a better flight deal.

Once you’re on the island, get around by bike, golf cart, or car. Tybee’s tiny and easy to navigate—most spots are just a quick ride from each other.
Best time to go to Tybee Island
Honestly, Tybee’s great year-round, but spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) are when you’ll get that sweet spot of perfect weather without the summer crowds.
- Spring: Beach weather’s on point, the flowers are blooming, and you can catch the beloved Tybee Beach Bum Parade in May (one of my favorite events on the coast).
- Fall: The ocean’s still warm, crowds thin out, and there is always something to do — we call this “Locals Season” and it’s the perfect time for local businesses to throw a party! Plan to be there for the quirky Tybee Island Pirate Festival and you won’t regret it.
- Winter: Quiet and peaceful if you’re into long beach walks and dolphin watching without the chaos. Try to catch the Christmas Parade, the Polar Plunge, and the New Year’s Eve fireworks on the pier! For an even longer list of holiday events – Christmas in Savannah is so much fun and just minutes away.
- Summer: Hot, humid, and packed with families, but that’s when the island really comes alive with live music on the pier and fireworks every chance they get.
Things to take into account:
- Parking: Parking on Tybee can be a pain and expensive, especially in summer. There’s metered parking near the beaches, but honestly, finding a place to stay that includes parking will save you money and a headache. Trust me on this one.
- Hurricane season: June to November, with August to October being the spiciest months. Just keep an eye on forecasts.
- Beach flag system: Pay attention to the warning flags—they’ll tell you about surf and weather conditions.
Always check the tides before heading out. It makes a huge difference for beach time and water activities.
How long to stay on Tybee Island
A long weekend (2-3 days) lets you hit the main beaches and attractions, but give yourself 4-5 days if you really want to soak it all in—explore the history, enjoy the nature, and eat your way through the local food scene without rushing.
Things to Do
Tybee’s small but mighty when it comes to things to do. I’ve made a whole list of the best attractions in Tybee Island, GA, but here’s what you don’t want to miss:

- Beaches: North Beach and South Beach both made the list of best beaches in Georgia. North Beach is a bit quieter—great for families and escaping the crowds. South Beach is where the action is, totally walkable and buzzing with bars, restaurants, and that classic beach town energy. Make it even better by renting a jet ski or going out on a tiki boat!
- Tybee Island Light Station and Museum: Climb all 178 steps to the top of Georgia’s tallest and oldest lighthouse. The views are insane. One of the best attractions in Tybee Island for sure.
- Fort Pulaski National Monument: This Civil War fort is incredibly well-preserved and just a short drive from Tybee. Fort Pulaski is another one of the best attractions in Tybee Island—walking trails, ranger programs, and seriously cool history.
- Little Tybee Island: This remote spot is perfect for the adventurer! Take a tour or rent a kayak—you can even camp on this remote island! It’s totally undeveloped, only accessible by boat, and feels like you’ve found your own private slice of Georgia coast.
- Kayaking & Paddleboarding: Glide through tidal creeks and marshes while keeping an eye out for herons, egrets, and whatever other coastal critters decide to show up.
- Fishing: Try surf fishing, hit the pier, or book a charter fishing trip for deep-sea fishing if you’re feeling adventurous.
- Biking: Rent a bike and cruise around, or take a Tybee Island Bike Tour!
- Tybee Island Marine Science Center: Learn about local marine life through hands-on exhibits and beach walks. Great for kids (and let’s be honest, adults too).

For the full lineup, check out the best restaurants on Tybee Island and don’t forget about the most important meal of the day! You can check out the best breakfast spots on Tybee Island here.
- The Breakfast Club – Local legend for breakfast on Tybee Island. Big portions, Southern hospitality, probably a wait (but so worth it). Keep in mind the weather – you’ll be waiting for your table outside!
- The Deck Beach Bar & Kitchen – This is one of my favorite restaurants on the island because of the local seafood, the open-air dining, and the view! You can walk right onto the deck from the sand of North Beach.
- A-J’s Dockside Restaurant – This seafood restaurant right on the water is one of the only ones on the island that takes reservations, so if you’re visiting during the busy season, I recommend making them!
- Sting Ray’s Seafood – Super casual, known for their seafood baskets and oyster buckets.
- Huc-A-Poo’s Bites & Booze – Fun, quirky spot with pizza and cocktails. The name alone should tell you what you’re in for.
