The blessing of the fleet is a time-honored tradition that dates back centuries to the fishing communities of Europe. This historical ceremony involves a priest or other clergy asking God for a bountiful harvest and for the protection of the men from the danger of the seas before they depart.
Here in Georgia the blessing focuses on the shrimp boats as shrimping is a vital industry in the region. The ceremonial blessing of the shrimp boats is usually given as the boat procession moves to the open water.
Modern day blessing festivals
Georgia has three fishing communities where the traditional blessing is combined with a spring seafood festival. Each will have live entertainment, a craft show, plenty of snack vendors with great food, lots of free activities for young and old, as well as the traditional boat parade.
Darien, Georgia
Darien holds the Georgia coast’s largest and most spectacular fleet blessing. The spring season event runs for three days on a Friday through Sunday. The festival pays tribute to the very heart and soul of Darien’s community – the shrimpers and their boats.
More than just a festival, the Blessing of the Fleet is a spirited celebration of family, food, and fun that embodies the warmth and hospitality of Darien.

Not only is it Georgia’s largest Blessing, but it’s the east coast’s best attended as well, bringing over 30,000 visitors annually.
Of course, the annual blessing of the fleet ceremony on Sunday is the highlight, but there is so much more. Food vendors have treats like ice cream, funnel cakes, and naturally plenty of seafood, with shrimp being the star.
Numerous bands will keep you entertained, there is a 5K competition, fireworks and a can’t-miss shrimp heading contest! Saturday morning has a parade on the streets of Darien, but the crowning glory is the boat parade on Sunday, including the blessing.
Anytime you find yourself staying in the Darien area you’ll want to check out Emma’s Driftwood Farm. It’s out from town just a little on beautiful waterfront property and there are five different homes you can rent individually or all together. It’s perfect for weddings, family reunions and corporate retreats!
Brunswick, Georgia
Brunswick is the gateway city to the Golden Isles of St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, Sea Island and Little St. Simons, but it’s worth a stop before you cross those causeways. Check here for the Top Things to Do in Brunswick and the Best Restaurants in Brunswick.
2024 marked the 86th Blessing of the Fleet in Brunswick, making it the state’s oldest. The event always takes place on the Saturday before Mother’s Day at the Mary Ross Waterfront Park.
It begins in the morning with a kids’ fishing tournament and continues into the afternoon with food trucks, live music, cooking demonstrations and more.
The boat parade and blessing ceremony take place early afternoon. A special highlight for me is bagpipes being played at the time of the blessing.
Thunderbolt, Georgia
If you find yourself in the Savannah area in late April you’ll want to make sure you catch this one!
The Thunderbolt Blessing of the Fleet returned in 2024 after a 3 year hiatus, and was, once again a great time along the Wilmington Riverfront. They also had a street parade as well as food vendors, live music and the boat parade.
