People come to the Tybee Island Campground for all sorts of reasons. Maybe they’re Savannah locals- this is known as “Savannah’s Beach,” after all, since historic downtown Savannah is just a 15 mile drive away.
Others come from South and Middle Georgia for the fresh local seafood, a great time in the bars, or a weekend getaway on the sandy beaches.
And some come from Atlanta looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, wanting to soak in some small town vibes and views of the Atlantic Ocean from the beautiful beaches.
No matter why you came here, one thing is for sure: Tybee Island is the ultimate place for a weekend camping getaway. While camping right on the beach is not permitted to protect the local wildlife like sea turtles and nesting birds, the island’s only campground is just a few short blocks away.

River’s End Campground & RV Park
Tucked away in a neighborhood with gorgeous historic homes and colorful beach cottages, you’ll find River’s End Campground. This is a fantastic home base whether you’re here for the beaches, the parties, the food, or the rich history.
This is the only campground on Tybee, so if you’re a tent camper or an RVer, this is the place to be. And what a lovely place it is!
Tucked under the live oaks, you’ll find tons of full hookup sites as well as primitive tent sites and even cozy cabins with all the comforts of home. And best, of all, it’s walking distance from the beach!
Campground Amenities
The amenities here at River’s End really couldn’t be better. Here’s what you can expect to find at one of the best RV parks on the east coast:
- A handy camp store and gift shop – Forgot something? No worries- they’ve got you covered.
- Fully equipped fitness center – I love this for those days when it’s too hot or rainy to get out and exercise. The fitness center is an amazing perk!
- 24-hour laundry – If you’re someone who spends weeks or months in an RV or pull-behind camper, you know how important this is.
- Complimentary wifi
- Swimming pool – You read that right. There’s a pool here! And not just any pool – This Tybee Island campground is home to the island’s largest swimming pool.
- Community pavilion– This is a great place to meet new friends!
- Dog park – Both of the island’s dog parks are right outside the campground and have benches and drinking stations.
- Picnic table at each campsite
- Clean restrooms and bath houses – River’s End takes pride in their bathroom facilities, so they’re always clean!
Things to Do Near the Tybee Island Campground
There’s no shortage of things to do here on Tybee Island! Here are some of my favorites:
Hit the Beach
River’s End is just 1/2 mile walk from North Beach which is one of the most popular beaches on the island. You’ll also love nearby South Beach (where the Tybee pier and pavilion are), Back River Beach ( a popular spot with the locals), and Mid Beach right in the middle of it all.
Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum
The Tybee Island Lighthouse is the oldest and tallest in the state. Standing 145 feet tall, it’s also one of the most intact historic lighthouses in the United States.
Take a trip up the 178 steps to the top to see 360-degree views of Tybee Island, Savannah, and the surrounding water.
Take a tour
​Get to know the island with a guided golf cart tour. You’ll learn about the rich history, the heritage, and the *gasp* hauntings that Tybee is known for.
The local tour guides are knowledgeable and so much fun to sightsee in golf carts with!
If a bike tour is more your speed, those are also available! Your local guide will meet you with a bike that is perfect for you before touring you around the beach, Fort Screven and Battery Garland, the Lighthouse and Museum, the Marine Science Center, and the Post Theater.
Both tours meet at North Beach, which is super convenient from River’s End!
Down at the South End, you can also take a walking tour that meets at TS Chu Department Store. This tour focuses on the history of places like the the Tybee Pier, Hotel Tybee, Breakfast Club (one of the best breakfast spots on Tybee Island), and Inlet Avenue.
Have a love for the spooky side of things? You’ll definitely want to check out the Tybee Island Ghost Tour! This nighttime stroll around the haunted parts of the South Beach area is family friendly, but also includes a mid-tour cocktail break if you’re so inclined.
Take a Surf Lesson
Also very convenient from the Tybee Island campgrounds, you can take surf lessons from a private instructor for a super affordable price!
The lesson includes basic board handling on the beach followed by up to 2 hours in the water with a knowledgeable instructor.
Go shopping
Hit the local shopping at The Shoppes at 1207 and Tybee Oaks, which are both close to the Tybee Island campgrounds. Here you’ll find locally made clothes and jewelry, small bath aromatherapy products, and local art made by talented artists.
Eat at a delicious restaurant
Tybee Island has more great restaurants than you can shake a stick at! We’ve put together a list of the best restaurants on Tybee Island, but you’re definitely going to want to check out The Original Crab Shack, complete with an alligator lagoon and back river views.
Don’t forget about the most important meal of the day, either! There are amazing places to get breakfast on Tybee Island, from the historic Breakfast Club to fresh organic bites at Mi Vida.
Visit Fort Pulaski
Fort Pulaski is truly a sight to behold! Surrounded by salt marsh, beaches, and maritime forests, this is a must-see for history buffs. You can still see the damage caused by Union cannonballs in some parts of the fort, and the views from the top are incredible.
Fort Pulaski is also dog-friendly, so feel free to bring your fur babies to explore the fort and the nature trails.
