Why Savannah is a Magical Christmas Destination

Savannah strikes the perfect balance when it comes to holiday charm — it feels like Christmas without going over the top. The weather is mild, often crisp enough for a cozy sweater but rarely bitterly cold, so it’s easy to enjoy outdoor events and evening strolls under the lights. The city’s festive spirit is pretty traditional, with wreaths on iron gates, carolers in historic squares, and storefronts tastefully decorated.

No matter when you go, you’ll want to start here planning your trip with this Savannah, Georgia Overview.

If you want a truly unique holiday experience, don’t miss the Savannah Lighted Boat Parade. Dozens of boats, from small sailboats to large yachts, glide along the Savannah River decked out in their holiday lights. The parade ends with fireworks, kicking off the holiday season in late November, typically the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Lighted Christmas Street Parade and Christmas on the River

A beloved Savannah tradition is the Lighted Christmas Street Parade, typically held in early to mid-December as part of the Christmas on the River weekend. Decorated floats, marching bands, dance troupes, and holiday characters wind their way along River Street in this festive family-friendly celebration. For a meaningful and unforgettable holiday experience, we highly recommend Christmas at the Cathedral! Held at the breathtaking Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, this annual concert is one of Savannah’s most treasured holiday traditions. Presented by the Cathedral Choir and Chamber Orchestra, the evening blends scripture, choral music, and audience carols to tell the story of the Nativity.

The invitation on the website of the Friends of Cathedral Music reads:

“Join us for a beloved holiday tradition as the Cathedral Choir and Chamber Orchestra present their annual Christmas at the Cathedral concert. This enchanting evening beautifully intertwines scripture readings with choral music to narrate the story of the Christ child, from the early prophecies to the wondrous visit of the Magi. Embrace the spirit of the season as you sing cherished carols alongside the choir, orchestra, and organ. The evening culminates with a carol by candlelight, creating a memorable and heartwarming experience for all.”

The concert for 2025 is on Sunday, December 21st at 5:00pm. Plan to arrive early due to the popularity of this event.

Historic District Decorated for the Season

During the holiday season, Savannah’s Historic District gets festive touches that add to its year-round beauty. You won’t find over-the-top decorations or flashing lights—instead, the city tends to have classic, understated touches that highlight its historic character.

Lamp posts are wrapped very simply in greenery and red ribbons and bows. Many of the city’s fountains are framed with garland and seasonal plants, and the squares take on a cozy but joyful feel. Storefronts and restaurants throughout downtown join in with decorated doors and windows, and you’ll spot wreaths, candles, and garlands on everything from front porches to iron gates.

While the whole historic district is beautiful, a few spots stand out:

  • Chippewa Square – One of the prettiest during the holidays (and every other time of the year), with its central fountain and decorated benches.
  • Jones Street – This is our favorite spot for a Savannah stroll! Often referred to as “the prettiest street in Savannah”, Jones Street is a must-see for its stately homes that go all-out during the holidays.
  • Bull Street – Runs through several squares and includes the iconic Forsyth Fountain
  • Broughton Street – Great for holiday shopping with decorated storefronts and sidewalk lights.
  • City Market – Lively and decorated, especially in the evenings with lights twinkling overhead.

A casual walk through these areas in the early evening is a great way to take in the season. A tour is fun, but not necessary. Just put on comfortable shoes and maybe a cup of hot chocolate to go.

Tip: For the adults you can even pour yourself a hot toddy or eggnog for your holiday explorations. Did you know that you can wander the historic district with alcoholic drinks, as long as they’re in 16-ounce plastic cups?
